Glass Bead Clipping Spider Ornament ~ Craft Project Kit Assembly Tutorial

Create a beautiful spider ornament to add to your autumn decor! These beaded spiders look complicated but they're built in such an ingeniously approachable way that you'll want to create a whole cluster.  Completed ornament measures about 3" long x 4" wide.  The illustrated steps below show the assembly of a project kit.

Each kit contains all necessary materials: beads, wire, a clip and a wooden piece.  You will also need a pair of scissors.

Supplies to make 1 ornament:

Spider project kit (kit contains beads, wire, a clip and a wooden piece)

Scissors

Step 1: Uncoil length of wire.  Cut a piece approximately 29" long.  String 1 golden seed bead onto the wire and slide it to the center of the wire.  Bring wires together and twist just above the seed bead.

Step 2: String on the raspberry bead with the narrow part down.  Next add the 2-bump bead just above the raspberry bead by wrapping the wires securely around the middle of the bead.

Step 3: String the acorn bead then one golden seed bead onto the wires.

Step 4: Using the small wooden piece, place it behind the wires, bend the wires around to form a loop, then twist the wires twice around themselves to secure.  Cut off excess wire with scissors, save wire.  We have formed the spider's body and will set it aside for a moment.

Step 5: We begin forming the legs.  Using a piece of excess wire, form a loop at the end of the wire by wrapping the wire around the wooden piece and then around itself 2-3 times to secure.

Step 6: String on an oat bead + seed + oat + seed + oat + 3-bump bead.  Thread the wire through the 2-bump bead on the body.

Step 7: After pulling the wire through the 2-bump bead, string the same beads onto the wire in reverse order: 3-bump + oat + seed + oat + seed + oat.  Use the wooden piece to make a loop at the end of the beads on the second leg.  Trim off excess wire, save wire.

Step 8: Using one of the longer excess wires, form a loop at the end with the help of the wooden piece again.  String on an oat bead + seed + oat + seed + oat.

Step 9: After stringing the third oat, wrap the wire around the 3-bump bead in the space between the first and middle bumps, shown below left.

Step 10: String on a red seed bead (the spider's eye).  Wrap the wire around between the golden seed bead and the acorn bead.

Step 11: String on the second red seed bead.  Wrap the wire around the 3-bump bead in the same position: between the first and middle bumps.

Step 12: Now string on an oat bead + seed + oat + seed + oat.  Use the wooden piece to form a wire loop as before.  Trim excess wire.

Step 13: Now we need to create the shorter bottom legs.  Once again, with an excess piece of wire use the wooden piece to make a loop at the end.  String on an oat bead + seed + oat.  Thread the wire through the 2-bump bead.

Step 14: String on an oat + seed + oat and again use the wooden piece to form a wire loop.  Trim excess wire.

Step 15: Repeat Steps 13 and 14 to form the last set of legs.

Step 16: Lastly we will attach the clip to the lower part of the spider.  Fold a piece of 11" wire in half so the wire is doubled up.  Thread this double wire through the holes on the clip so the clip is centered.

Step 17: Position the clip under the spider slightly sideways.  Tightly but gently wrap the wires between the raspberry and the 2-bump bead.  One side of the wire will wrap clockwise, the other side will wrap counter-clockwise.  Trim excess wires.

Step 18: Adjust the legs as desired and display proudly!

Tips and Notes:

-- Project kits have instruction sheets -- the instructions are in Czech but the images are easy to follow.

-- Be mindful of keeping your wire work orderly: not so tight that beads are stressed and break but not so loose that the ornament has poor form.

-- We stock various colors of the raspberry, acorn and oat beads.  If you wish to customize your spider's colors, we suggest getting a kit to have key components (2-bump, 3-bump, red eye beads and clip) and then during assembly substituting the raspberry, acorn and oat bead colors of your liking.  To make a color substitution you would need the following bead quantities: 20 oat beads, 1 berry bead, 1 acorn bead.
