Decoupage Floral Spun Cotton Easter Egg Ornaments DIY Craft Tutorial

These decoupage egg ornaments are so fun and easy to make with literally hundreds of color and design combinations possible!  We used spun cotton eggs that are slightly bigger than a real chicken egg.

Supplies: Spun Cotton EggsRice Paper Sheets, Miniature Dresden Borders, 1/8" Velvet Ribbon, Metallic Paints, Mod Podge, Paint Brushes, Alleen's Craft Glue, Scissors, Pipe Cleaners or Skewers for Drying

Step 1: Tear rice paper images from sheets and decide on placement.  If using a patterned sheet, cut a strip about 1-1/4" wide and long enough to pass around the egg shape once with slight overlap.

Step 2: Paint Mod Podge onto area of egg and on back of rice paper image.  Place image on egg and gently press into place.  The image will lay down on the curve of the egg with slight overlaps and folds in the design. Paint a coat of Mod Podge over the top of the design, taking care not to "rough" the fibers of the paper and scuff the image.  Repeat for each additional image.  Let dry completely (generally over an hour).

Step 3: Paint top and bottom of egg with coordinating metallic paint.  Let dry.

Step 4: Glue mini Dresden border along edges of paint at top and bottom to make a "frame" for your center design.  Let dry.

Step 5: Cut a  5" length of velvet ribbon to make a loop hanger.  Fold ribbon in half and glue about 1/4" to 1/2" of ends into hole at top of egg.  Let dry.

Tips: Use a skewer or pipe cleaner in the hole as a "handle" when painting and drying, too.

Tearing images from the rice paper sheets leaves edges frayed and rough which is ideal for a smoother application.  Cutting images leaves a harder edge that is more visible on your finished ornament.  Cutting a strip from a patterned sheet, however, allows you to have an edge to paint to and then later hide with the Dresden trim.

Metallic paint gives shimmer and dimension to your ornament.  We used a mix of Martha Stewart Crafts pains in various "Pearl" hues.
